DMSO for Brain Health


 Studies of DMSO have been done on various types of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.  Tests indicate that DMSO helps brain cells to mature, communicate better with each other and it increases the blood flow and oxygen to the brain. 

As a person gets older and circulation becomes impaired, the amount of nutrients and oxygen flow to the brain is reduced.   Over a period of six months a group of Alzheimer’s patients were treated with DMSO and they showed marked improvement including better memory, communication, concentration and a reduction in disorientation. 

One of the primary ways that DMSO is able to have such a positive impact on brain dysfunction is its ability to dissolve what is referred to as amyloid protein.  These amyloid proteins are considered abnormal deposits and are distributed throughout bodily tissue in various different forms and are directly connected to over thirty-six types of human disease including Alzheimer’s, Type 2 Diabetes, heart problems and brain trauma.

With the natural ability for DMSO to help improve the health of the brain, it stands to reason that it would be beneficial in treating people that have endured head trauma.   Brain damage usually affects the brain within four hours of injury because of the accumulation of blood, which causes the brain to swell, resulting in intracranial pressure.  Since DMSO increases blood flow, this can help reduce the inflammation and remove the excess blood. 

Studies performed at the Neurological Surgery Division at a university in Turkey administered DMSO intravenously to head trauma patients and the intracranial pressure was shown to return to normal within the first twenty-four hours, and the treatment was continued over the course of two to ten days to avoid the intracranial pressure from rebuilding, while the brain healed.

While it is ideal for the DMSO to be administered immediately after brain injury, it still offers positive results for people long after injury.  One incident is that of a girl who at the age of 13 was thrown off a horse in a competition and her skull was partially crushed.  She experienced nerve damage and memory loss.  After over a decade after her injury occurred she was given DMSO injections and her mental clarity was regained as well as control and feeling in her extremities.  So this offers promising hope to athletes who have endured head trauma due to competition in boxing, football, etc.


While it is true that in these extreme scenarios, DMSO was administered through IV or injection, it does still show promising results when applied topically.  Used by many athletes and arthritis sufferers, DMSO is recognized for its pain relief.  DMSO is safest when purchased in glass bottles versus plastic to reduce the potential of plastic leeching into the product.
